RM Sotheby´s Auktion in Arizona - 28.+29.01.2016

With a history of attracting the hobby’s most noteworthy cars, buyers and sellers, RM Sotheby’s will present its 17th annual Arizona Biltmore sale, 28-29 January. Featuring a superb roster of some 150 blue-chip automobiles and select memorabilia, the sale is set to continue RM’s enviable track record in Phoenix.

Leading an incredibly diverse list of offerings for the two-evening sale is the exquisite 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster by Sindelfingen, chassis no. 130894. An original U.S.-delivery example with known history from new, it is one of very few finished in the most desirable configuration of “longtail”, “high door”, left-hand-drive. A car of unparalleled elegance, it comes to market later this month for the first time in decades.

Switching gears, the catalogue boasts a trio of adrenaline-pumping Shelby Cobras, headlined by the 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra, CSX 3010. One of just 23 examples produced and delivered new to Don Russell Jr., it is the only 427 Cobra to win championships in two countries. Then there’s the 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra 'Dragonsnake', CSX 2093, presented exactly as it competed, including a Weber-carbureted 289 Ford V8 with Bellanger side mount header, four-speed transmission, Cobra Sunburst rear wheels with slicks, wire front wheels, removable hard top and eye-grabbing magenta metal-flake paint. There’s also the 1964 Shelby 289 Cobra, CSX 2561, a turn-key Cobra ready for more trouble-free rallying.

Additional highlights include a selection of some of the most sought-after automobiles from numerous eras and genres. For collectors of American Classics comes a stunning 1929 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing Top Torpedo Convertible Coupe, J-414, one of just six original examples built and featuring a one-off tail design and numerous unique features. There’s also a beautifully restored 1933 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria, believed to be one of just four authentic survivors and offered publicly for the first time, and a stunning example of Briggs Cunningham’s Le Mans dream car, a 1952 Cunningham C-3 Coupe. One of 19 coupes built, and the only Vignale-bodied example actively raced in period, the C-3 boasts numerous one-off features and an exquisite concours restoration by RM Auto Restoration.

Representing iconic touring Ferraris of the 1960s, the catalogue also features a freshly restored 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II, stunning in its original color combination of Blue Sera over Pelle Naturale, along with a luxurious 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS, one of only 200 built and the recipient of a recent cosmetic refreshening.

Not forgetting the more modern examples, the catalogue is rounded out by a superb series of late model collectibles, including a pair of supercars equipped with six-speed manual transmissions—a very desirable specification in today’s market. Included in this group, a highly appointed 2005 Ferrari 575 Superamerica, the modern, open-top V-12 Ferrari at its best; and quite possibly the lowest mileage six-speed 2007 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640-4, finished in the seldom-seen Oro Adonis

1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet, $6,380,000 - Top sale of the 2015 Amelia Island week and a new auction record for the model

RM Sotheby’s, the official auction house of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, achieved spectacular results during its 17th annual Amelia Island sale on the weekend. This was the first official RM Sotheby’s sale since RM Auctions and Sotheby’s formed a strategic partnership in February, and its remarkable results represent the highest total ever recorded for a sale held during the Amelia Island week.

Taking top sale honors of the day and of the entire Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance week was the 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet, chassis no. 1945 SA, achieving a very strong $6,380,000 to comfortably set a new world record for the model at auction.



“We were thrilled to present as significant a car as the 400 Superamerica here at Amelia Island”, said Gord Duff, Car Specialist, RM Sotheby’s. “Both the importance of the car and the success of RM Sotheby’s international team in uniting collectors with the world’s finest automobiles is reflected in its result. The outstanding sale total is a sign of the ever-expanding market for blue-chip collector cars, with bidders hailing from no fewer than 22 countries, of which 22 percent were new to RM Sotheby’s.”

Providing further proof of Ferrari’s domination at the top of the market, additional lots garnering strong prices included the genuine 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, realizing $3,300,000; a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4, bringing a record $495,000, and the time warp 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta, dubbed “the Condo Find”, achieving a fantastic $770,000.



Some of the most electric moments of the auction were brought about by the record sales of late model and emerging collectibles. Notable highlights included the exceedingly rare, six-speed manual 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB, which nearly tripled its pre-sale estimate at $682,000, smashing the previous auction record for the model. A pair of Ferrari 512 models also exceeded expectations, with the 1995 F512 M selling for $462,000 and the1980 512 BB garnering $418,000.

Ferrari wasn’t the only high performing marque of the sale, with prices for fantastic Porsche 911s continuing to rise. Amongst numerous examples, a 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring sold for $891,000, a 1988 911 Turbo ‘Slant Nose’ Cabriolet for $363,000, and a 1979 911 Turbo brought $253,000. Japanese collectibles also continue to make waves in the collector car market, with the much-talked-about 1970 Nissan Fairlady Z 432 surpassing its estimate to bring a record-breaking $253,000.

Our 15th year in Arizona has been a success, with 10 vehicles realizing million-dollar-plus results and new auction records being set. That means our 2014 auction season is off to a strong start after our January 16–17 event, with an impressive $45,563,450 million in sales.

The headliner? A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, which, at $8.8 million, set a record as the most valuable car ever sold at an Arizona auction.
